Our Instructors


Terry Oliver, Director of Operations:


Terry OLIVER began his personal protection training over 4 decades ago and has studied and taught a number of realistic Personal Protection systems that include verbal de-escalation strategies and realistic personal protection skills.

Terry has extensive practical experience in the area of conflict management, workplace violence prevention and preparation and personal protection. His experience includes over 25 years of practical experience successfully resolving high risk situations, 4˝ years as a high risk operator and instructor on a special operations team, 2 years on an explosive disposal unit and over 30 years as an instructor of confrontation management.

He has instructed thousands of students in all areas of Communication, Personal Protection and Security, Legal Articulation and Workplace Violence Prevention and Preparation.

Mr. Oliver was a member of a team that was responsible for the safety and security of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on her visit to Hamilton.

He has guarded heads of organizations and has been responsible for guarding witnesses in high stakes trials.

Terry is a highly sought after and popular public speaker and seminar leader, and is considered to be an expert in his field.

Mr. Oliver has created, implemented and taught programs for municipalities, corporations, hospitals, security companies, special operations units, drug teams, veteran officers and private citizens.

In 1993 he was seconded to The Ontario Police College where he taught Defensive Tactics, Tactical Communication, Personal Protection and the legalities of personal safety to recruits, veteran officers and instructor candidates for over 2 years.

Terry is a police officer and is the founder of Conflict Management Associates.



Monty Dinally, Mental Health Instructor:


Monty Dinally is an accomplished mental health professional with over 25 years of experience in a variety of areas including case management and crisis intervention. He has a great deal of practical experience assessing individuals who are in an acute mental health crisis. Monty is currently with the COAST team which is a crisis intervention joint venture. Monty has created and instructed a number of workshops and seminars involving mental health issues as they relate to the workplace and is in demand as a speaker and presenter.

He has recently completed his Crisis Negotiator Recertification, is married and is the proud father of two very active and sports oriented boys. Monty currently instructs two seminars for Conflict Management Associates: Strategies for Dealing with Emotionally Disturbed Persons which is a half day workshop, and Mental Illness in the Workplace, which is a full day seminar.



Perry Mason:


Perry Mason recently completed 34 years of policing with the Hamilton Police Service, retiring in the fall of 2013.

For the last 10 years of his career he worked as a School Resource Officer and developed extensive experience with respect to bullying related issues. Perry is considered an expert on bullying and solutions to resolve it.

Perry is a committee member of the Hamilton Coalition for the Prevention of Bullying. He was recently on an advisory committee to the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health at CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario). He is also on the Board of Governors for Alternatives for Youth, Hamilton.

Perry has appeared on local and national television and spoken to various print and media outlets regarding matters pertaining to Youth Justice, Bullying and Restorative Justice. He has spoken at various provincial and national conferences and has given hundreds of talks and workshops on bullying, Restorative Justice and related issues. Before retiring, Perry sat on several Restorative Justice committees and was instrumental in bringing the concepts to stakeholders in the City of Hamilton. He has successfully evolved Restorative Justice practices into an effective Alternative Dispute Resolution program which is effective for Workplace Restoration.

Perry has won Provincial and National Awards for his work with Bullying and Restorative Practices. He was also nominated for Citizen of the Year in Stoney Creek in 2012. He is a sought after speaker with respect to issues surrounding Bullying and Restorative Practices. He has recently been speaking to educators about issues surrounding mental health and anxiety in the classroom.

Perry has an extremely unique and innovative perspective to bullying and Restorative Justice issues which arise from both personal and professional experience.

Perry has two children aged 27 and 25, and a 10 year old grandson.



Kent Laidlaw:


Kent Laidlaw is a retired police officer having served 31 years. His last posting was as the District Commander for the City of Burlington with the Halton Regional Police Service. He then served as Senior Advisor – Policing and as a consultant for the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services for 8 years. Kent offers workshops and services to the corporate sector, emergency service responders, not-for-profit organizations, victim service providers and others in the care giving professions.

Kent also offers specialized research and consulting services for the legal profession. He specializes in the areas of death notification, sensitive communications, debriefings and wellness issues for first responders.

Kent has successfully completed training in:
  1. Basic and Advanced Critical Incident Stress Management with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Baltimore, MA;
  2. International Crisis Response by the National Organization Of Victims Assistance, Washington DC; and,
  3. Compassion Fatigue with Green Cross Academy of Traumatology, Becker, MN.
Kent is a Certified Trauma Responder with the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists (ATSS) in Verona, NJ, and a Field Traumatologist with Green Cross Academy of Traumatology. He is also a trained Hostage Negotiator through the Canadian Police College in Ottawa.

Kent has provided training throughout the United States, England, Austria, Albania and Canada. He has also worked in Bosnia with women who were atrocity survivors.

Kent was the recipient of the Communicator of the Year Award by The Canadian Public Relations Society.

He is a past member of several boards, including:
  • past Chair of Mission Services, Hamilton, ON;
  • board member of the Family Assistance Foundation, Atlanta, GA;
  • board member of the Green Cross Foundation, Tallahassee, FL.
He is currently:
  • immediate Past President of Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists, Verona, NJ;
  • a member of the Professional Advisory Board of Bereaved Families of Ontario;
  • a founding member of the Canadian Police Chiefs International Service Agency Toronto; and,
  • a board member of Homestead Christian Care, Hamilton, ON




Dr. Paulette Laidlaw:


Dr. Laidlaw is a clinical, counselling and rehabilitation psychologist. She provides individual treatment (counselling and assessment) to adults 19 years of age and older who are experiencing difficulties related to their psychological and/or emotional health or well-being. Models of therapy that Dr. Laidlaw finds helpful include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy and brief psychotherapy.

Dr. Laidlaw has been in private practice in Burlington, Ontario, for approximately 5 years. She has extensive experience providing psychological services to inpatients and outpatients in various hospitals in the GTA (Mount Sinai, Women’s College, CAMH, Markham/Stouffville). She also has specialized training and experience in critical incident stress, posttraumatic stress disorder and the psychological difficulties of first responders and others in the caregiving professions. Dr. Laidlaw recently worked for the OPP as Manager, Psychological Services, in order to provide advice and consultation to the EAP program and to restructure the psychological assessment and personnel selection process. She currently provides pre-employment selection assessments to the OPP and the RCMP and fit-for-duty assessments to various police services.

Dr. Laidlaw has worked with a diverse population presenting a wide range of issues. She has a special interest in the following areas:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety (e.g., panic attacks, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hoarding, etc.)
  • Bereavement/grief/loss
  • Reactions to trauma/abuse (e.g., sexual abuse, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD], Critical Incident Stress [CIS] related to front-line emergency responders – Paramedics, Police, Firefighters, Military personnel and family members).
Dr. Laidlaw offers personality, intellectual, developmental and vocational assessments. She provides psycholegal assessments for law firms, and has extensive experience with Worker Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (CICB), and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) claims. She is a registered provider for Health Claims for Auto Insurance (HCAI), the Salvation Army, Blue Cross, the Victim Quick Response Program (VQRP) and Veterans Affairs Canada.

Qualifications:
  • BA Honors in Psychology, Laurentian University, Sudbury
  • MA in Human Development (combined Psychology, Kinesiology and Sociology), Laurentian University, Sudbury
  • Certificate, Trauma Counseling for Front-Line Workers, Hincks-Dellcrest Centre, Toronto
  • MEd in Counseling Psychology at the University of Toronto
  • PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Toronto
  • Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario
Dr. Laidlaw is a member of the Ontario Psychological Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists, the Family Assistance Foundation, the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology, and the American Association of Suicidology.
